Who is Matin Siraj?
Shahawar Matin Siraj, also know as ALI, is a Pakistani-America who was arrested in 2004 and sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2007 for terrorism charges following a now highly-profiled extensive entrapment scheme orchestrated by the NYPD - part of their pervasive illegal and discriminatory surveillance program which targeted Muslims. This was exposed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting by the associate press, which included an article titled NYPD's Spying Programs Yielded Only Mixed Results that revealed Matin's case originated through the surveillance program. The NYPD was subsequently sued and agreed in a settlement to significantly curtail those surveillance practices.
